Review: Guardians of Being

Guardians of Being: Spiritual Teachings from Our Dogs and Cats by Eckhart Tolle (2009)
128 pages
Summary: This wonderfully unique collaboration brings together two masters of their fields, joining original words by spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle with delightful illustrations by Patrick McDonnell, the creator of the acclaimed comic strip MUTTS. Every heartwarming page provokes thought, insight, and smiling reverence for all beings and each moment.

More than a collection of witty and charming drawings, the marriage of Patrick McDonnell’s art and Eckhart Tolle’s words conveys a profound love of nature, of animals, of humans, of all life-forms. Guardians of Being celebrates and reminds us of not only the oneness of all life but also the wonder and joy to be found in the present moment, amid the beauty we sometimes forget to notice all around us.

I absolutely adore Eckhart Tolle.  I’ve read both of his other books and they changed my life.  I would read every book he ever writes.  Unfortunately he’s only written 3 and this one isn’t a complete book.  It’s more like a children’s book.  Lots of illustrations and not many words.  Still, it’s amazing!

Before reading this I wasn’t at all familiar with Mutts or the work of Patrick McDonnell but I really enjoyed his simple drawings.  Mostly it’s pictures of dogs and cats, along with some inspiring words by Eckhart.  It seems so simple but it’s also deeply profound.

I encourage everyone to read this book.  However it might be easier to understand if you’re already familiar with the terminology that Eckhart uses by reading his previous book or books.  He does seem to try to keep it simple in case this is the first book people encounter by him.  It’s great if you want to deepen your spirituality.  But it’d also make a great gift for a pet lover.  Overall, wonderful book.

My Rating: ★★★★★
