BTT asks two questions: Has a book ever inspired you to change anything in your life, fiction or non-fiction alike? And, There have been books I loved, books that I fell in love with, and books that changed my life, and they’re not always the same nor mutually exclusive.
My Answer: The only books I can really say this about are the two by Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth and The Power of Now. I’m sure there are some novels which affected me when I read them but none so deeply that they spring to mind now or altered my life in a really dramatic way. Now, saying that might come across as if I’ve never read any really good novels. On the contrary, I have.
And while I may not have made external changes to my life because of them, they have all affected me in some way. Some make me appreciate what I have, others teach me to be more open-minded and non-judgmental while many make me appreciate life and remind me not to take myself too seriously.
In general, books and reading have taught me a lot about myself. Being part of the book community online has also taught me a lot as well about books and how both they and their readers are perceived. There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding some books and what I’ve learned most of all is that I shouldn’t judge someone based on what they read and that reading isn’t something that should be categorized or mandated. Some believe reading should be educational only and reading for entertainment is looked down upon. From reading some of these arguments I’ve learned to be more open-minded about other readers and, just because I don’t enjoy a certain book doesn’t mean that someone else is inferior because they do.
