The Day 4 blogging topic of Book Blogger Appreciation Week is to highlight a book or author you love but many people might not know about. I’ve read quite a few great books this year but I can’t say they are really unknown books. So instead I’ll mention two books I read recently which, prior to reading them, I had absolutely no idea they existed and had never even heard of the authors. Yet both books completely blew me away and are already among my favorites read so far this year.
I haven’t reviewed either on my blog yet and thought about including the reviews in this post but that would throw off the order of things. So if you want to read the full review, I’ll be posting them next week.
The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham: A science fiction novel about what happens when everyone suddenly becomes blind and mysterious plants called Triffids soon become the dominant species. This book is horrifying because it’s so well written and focuses on the struggle of humanity to survive in a crumbling world.
Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman: A group of male explorers discover a world of women. As they get to know the world of Herland, they can’t help but make observations about the shortcomings of their own world and examine their ideas about men and women. This book has some great world building and I found it fascinating. The author created a whole world and it felt like traveling to another country or planet.
Have you heard of either of these books or authors before? Can you recommend me something similar? What books or authors do you love that no one has heard of?
For more recommendations check out all the day 4 posts or my list of the top books of 2012 that I wrote for Armchair BEA.

Oh, yes! I love Charlotte Perkins Gilman! I haven’t read Herland, yet, though… it’s been on my wish list for some time. I should really move it up, one of these days.

This is the first book I’ve read by her. If her others are just as good then I can’t wait to read them!

I’ve been interested in Herland for quite a while, but I’ve never heard of The Day of the Triffids. They both sound good.
I hope you get a chance to read them. They were both so so good!
I read Herland this year. That book was craaaazy! If you haven’t read The Yellow Wallpaper by Gilman, you really should.
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll look it up.
I’ve heard of The Day of the Triffids, but have never read it. One of these days, maybe. Herland sounds pretty strange, but interesting!

I’m so happy you included a John Wyndham book! But Day of the Triffids isn’t my favorite – have you read The Chrysalids or The Midwich Cuckoos? Both are brilliant. The Chrysalids blew me away when I was a kid – my youngest read it years ago and it had the same effect on her.
Day of the Triffids was the first I’d heard of Wyndham and I definitely want to read more from him. Thanks to your recommendation, I think I’ll check out The Chrysalids next!
Looking forward to your review of The Day of the Triffids, I’d love to hear more about it.
The review will be up tomorrow. I hope you get a chance to check it out because it’s really good and a very memorable book…I still think about it and I finished it last month!
