Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction

Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction (2013)

Series: Sex Criminals

32 pages

Goodreads Summary: Suzie’s a normal girl with an extraordinary ability: when she has sex, she stops time. One night she meets John… who has the same gift. And so they do what any other sex-having, time-stopping, couple would do: they rob banks.

The description of this graphic novel series is that it’s “in the vein o The 40-Year Old Virgin and Bridesmaids, a sex comedy for comics.”  I’d never heard of it before but was able to get a copy on my iPad and decided to read it.  I read all three volumes as they are each only 32 pages.

At first it was hard to keep track of the story because it moved back and forth from past to present.  The main character, Suzie, explains how things started with her, what she did when she realized she could stop time, etc.  Then in the next volume, she meets a guy who has the same power as her.

Suzie also works at a library and when the bank wants to shut it down, they decide to rob the bank.  So it’s a little misleading that the book is all about robbery and theft.  I thought it was going to be all about criminals who use their power to commit crimes.  And maybe it’s going in that direction, but so far that doesn’t seem to be the main focus.

So it’s a really interesting concept and I’m curious to see where it’s going.  It is quite humorous and unique, not to mention a short and fun little read.  If you’re looking for something a little edgy and funny, then why not pick up this series and see if it’s for you!

So far there are three volumes:
Sex Criminals #1: Suzie Down in the Quiet
Sex Criminals #2: Come, World
Sex Criminals #3: My Sexual Errors and Misfortunes 2001-Present
